Muslim Judge in Madhya Pradesh Threatened After Convicting Lynching Case Offenders

A Muslim judge in Madhya Pradesh has found herself at the center of controversy and danger after issuing life sentences to seven men involved in a lynching incident. The case relates to the tragic assault on Sheikh Lala Nazir Ahmed, a truck driver who was attacked by a mob alleging he was involved in cattle smuggling in Barakhar village, located in the Seoni Malwa tehsil. The verdict, which was delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Tabassum Khan, has sparked a wave of communal backlash against her.

Following Judge Khan’s sentencing on June 12, a series of disturbing videos surfaced on social media platforms. These videos contained explicit death threats against her, accompanied by communal slurs that aimed to incite further division. In an alarming display of protest, effigies representing the judge were burned in various demonstrations, showcasing the extent of the hostility she now faces.

In response to these threats, local police in Narmadapuram have initiated an investigation and filed a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provisions, which address the promotion of enmity and the use of language intended to deliberately offend religious sentiments. Abhishek Ranjan, the Additional Superintendent of Police for Narmadapuram, confirmed that the judge’s security has been bolstered amidst ongoing inquiries to identify the perpetrators behind the social media harassment.

Political leaders have voiced their concern over the situation, with Congress leader Vivek Tankha condemning the abusive treatment directed at Judge Khan. Tankha expressed that the silence from the judiciary and government officials regarding this issue is particularly troubling. The case highlights a broader pattern of intimidation faced by individuals in the judiciary, especially those from minority communities, and raises questions about the protection of judicial independence in the face of communal tensions.

This incident comes in the wake of ongoing discussions in India regarding communalism, the rule of law, and the responsibilities of the judiciary to uphold justice without fear or favor.
