Eviction Drive Intensifies in West Bengal, New Notices Issued for PWD Land and Under Flyovers

The state government’s drive to clear encroachments from government and public spaces in West Bengal continues. Work to remove long-standing encroachments from railway stations and adjoining areas had already been underway. Now, in addition to that, new notices have been issued to remove illegal occupations that have sprung up on Public Works Department (PWD) land and beneath various flyovers.

Since the issuance of these notices, concern and subdued resentment have spread among residents of the affected areas and small traders. Many say that families who have been earning their livelihood by doing business in these places for years may now face uncertainty and a crisis of employment.

On the other hand, the state government says the drive is being carried out to make urban and densely populated areas cleaner, safer, and more organized. According to the government, clearing public land of encroachments is necessary to ensure smooth traffic movement, improve public convenience in commuting, and enhance the city’s aesthetics.

The administration has said that such eviction drives will continue in various parts of the state in the coming days as well. However, mixed reactions are being observed among affected people and local residents over this move.
