In a significant political shift, six Members of Parliament from the Shiv Sena faction led by Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray have defected to the rival faction headed by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This exodus has diminished the Uddhav Sena’s representation in the Lok Sabha from nine to just three MPs, while bolstering the Shinde faction’s strength to 13 MPs. The lawmakers who made the switch include Nagesh Patil Ashtikar from Hingoli, Omprakash Nimbalkar from Osmanabad, Mumbai North-East’s Sanjay Dina Patil, Sanjay Deshmukh representing Yavatmal-Washim, Sanjay Jadhav from Parbhani, and Bhausaheb Wakchaure from Shirdi.
The defections come in the wake of a crucial meeting held by Uddhav Thackeray with leaders of his faction in Mumbai, where they deliberated on impending political changes, organizational strategies, and legislative approaches. This meeting underscores the ongoing struggles within the Shivsena as factions vie for power and influence.
In a separate and tragic incident, a devastating fire broke out in a three-story building housing a coaching center in Lucknow’s Aliganj area, claiming the lives of 14 students. Reports indicate that four additional individuals sustained injuries and have been hospitalized for treatment. Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media depicted harrowing scenes of people leaping from the first floor of the building in a desperate attempt to escape the flames. This incident has sparked significant concern regarding safety regulations in educational establishments across the state.
On another front in Indian politics, the Odisha Assembly Speaker, Surama Padhy, has rejected a petition from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) that sought the disqualification of eight of its MLAs. The petition accused these legislators of cross-voting during the Rajya Sabha elections held in March. According to Speaker Padhy, the petition was deemed “cryptic, vague, and unsubstantiated,” failing to meet the necessary statutory criteria for such actions.
As these events unfold, they highlight the complexities and challenges faced in both political and social spheres within India, illustrating a landscape marked by both turmoil and tragedy.
