In a distressing incident that has sent shockwaves through Uttarakhand, an 18-year-old Dalit boy named Ketan Lal was allegedly murdered by the family of a 15-year-old upper caste girl due to their purported romantic relationship. The tragic events unfolded in the Tehri Garhwal district, highlighting the deep-rooted caste-based discrimination that continues to plague Indian society.
According to reports, Ketan was lured to the girl’s home following a phone call from her. It is alleged that once he arrived, he was forcibly held and beaten by her family members, including her father and grandfather. Senior Superintendent of Police Shweta Choubey confirmed that Ketan was assaulted throughout the night until the following morning, when the situation took a disastrous turn.
After the brutal assault, the girl’s father reportedly contacted Ketan’s father, Dhampal Lal, informing him that he had killed his son and disposed of the body in a nearby stream. When Dhampal arrived at the location, he found Ketan severely injured. While being transported to the hospital, Ketan disclosed to his father that he had been attacked primarily because of his Dalit identity, a statement that underscores the ongoing caste tensions in the region.
Unfortunately, Ketan succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment. Dhampal has claimed that he recorded Ketan’s final statements on video, which he has submitted to the authorities as evidence. This shocking case has reignited discussions on the systemic violence faced by Dalits in India, amplifying calls for urgent reforms and societal change.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from various sections of society, as activists and community leaders demand justice for Ketan and call for stringent actions against caste-based violence. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that still persist in achieving equality and justice in a society marked by rigid caste hierarchies.
