Congress Relocates Madhya Pradesh MLAs to Karnataka Amidst BJP’s Alleged Poaching Strategy

In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18, the Congress party has relocated a significant number of its MLAs from Madhya Pradesh to Bengaluru, Karnataka. This decision, taken on Wednesday, comes in light of concerns regarding potential poaching by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While most of the Congress legislators made the journey, a few senior members remained in Bhopal.

Umang Singhar, the Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, emphasized the importance of this relocation, stating, “It is vital to keep an eye on activities, especially given the manner in which the BJP is attempting to create disturbances.” Singhar reiterated that Congress MLAs are more comfortable in a state where their party is in power, underscoring the political tension unfolding in Madhya Pradesh.

The move involved 48 Congress MLAs taking an afternoon flight on Tuesday, with another group expected to travel later in the evening. The Madhya Pradesh Assembly, which comprises 230 members, will be choosing three representatives for the Rajya Sabha. To secure a seat, candidates need a minimum of 58 first-preference votes, given the Assembly’s effective strength of 229 votes.

Currently, the BJP holds a dominant position in the Assembly with 164 MLAs, excluding the Speaker. The Congress, on the other hand, has 63 MLAs, along with support from their ally, the Bharat Adivasi Party. With the BJP needing 116 votes to secure two of the three available seats, they are well-positioned; however, they will fall short of the necessary votes to capture the third seat, needing 48 more votes.

This ongoing political maneuvering highlights the intense rivalry between the Congress and BJP in Madhya Pradesh. As the Rajya Sabha elections draw closer, both parties are employing various strategies to ensure their influence in the upper house of Parliament. The Congress’s proactive relocation of its MLAs to Karnataka reflects their determination to safeguard their interests and mitigate any potential threats posed by the BJP’s alleged tactics.
