The Maharashtra government has introduced a significant scheme aimed at alleviating the financial burdens of farmers across the state. On Tuesday, the Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, approved the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Shetkari Karjamukti Yojana, which provides loan waivers of up to ₹2 lakh. This ambitious plan, announced during the state budget presentation in March, carries an estimated allocation of ₹36,585 crore and is expected to benefit approximately 55.72 lakh farmers.
The scheme encompasses three vital components: loan waivers, a one-time settlement initiative, and incentive benefits for those farmers who have consistently repaid their loans on time. Under the first component of the plan, farmers who have crop loans that were outstanding as of September 30, 2025, and remained unpaid by the deadline of March 31, 2026, will qualify for a complete waiver. This provision allows farmers to apply for the scheme irrespective of the size of their landholding, making it more inclusive.
For farmers with crop debts exceeding ₹2 lakh, the one-time settlement provision offers a grace period until March 31, 2027, to clear the excess amount. After settling their dues, the government will waive an amount of up to ₹2 lakh, thus providing considerable financial relief. This aspect of the scheme aims to encourage timely repayments while alleviating the stress of larger debts.
The final component focuses on rewarding farmers who adhere to their repayment schedules. This initiative not only emphasizes the importance of timely loan repayments but also provides incentives, fostering a culture of financial responsibility among the farming community.
This new scheme comes at a time when farmers in Maharashtra have been grappling with various challenges, including adverse weather conditions and fluctuating crop prices that have put immense pressure on their livelihoods. By implementing this comprehensive loan waiver scheme, the state government hopes to support the agricultural sector and enhance the economic stability of a significant portion of its population.
