A devastating fire erupted in a building located in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, on Wednesday, resulting in the tragic loss of 20 lives. Reports from the Delhi Police indicate that the blaze broke out in the late hours, leading to a swift response from emergency services and firefighters.
According to reports, 47 individuals were successfully rescued from the multi-story structure. Fire Officer AK Malik stated that the fire was brought under control in a timely manner, minimizing further damage. However, the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Notably, among those present in the building were foreign nationals. Preliminary investigations suggested that the structure was not a conventional residential building. Malik pointed out that many occupants were likely relatives of patients being treated at the nearby MAX Hospital, which is situated directly across the street. This has led authorities to believe that the building served as temporary accommodation for these visitors.
Rescue operations were intense, with some individuals found trapped in the basement of a restaurant within the building. The Delhi Fire Service officials confirmed that the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of all individuals affected were paramount. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has mobilized teams from the Delhi Fire Service, police, and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority to assist in the aftermath.
The tragic incident has raised several questions regarding safety regulations and building codes in the area. Local residents and authorities are now calling for a thorough investigation to prevent such incidents in the future. As the community mourns the loss of life, the focus is also on improving safety measures to protect those staying in similar accommodations.
