Maharashtra Government Cuts 80 Lakh Women from Ladki Bahin Scheme, Sparks Opposition Outcry

The Maharashtra government recently announced the removal of approximately 80 lakh women from the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme following a comprehensive verification process. This decision has ignited criticism from opposition parties, who argue that it highlights the state’s ongoing financial troubles.

Launched in June 2024, the Ladki Bahin scheme aimed to support women aged between 21 and 65 from families earning under Rs 2.5 lakh annually by providing them with a monthly stipend of Rs 1,500. However, a state-wide e-KYC process, which aimed to verify the eligibility of beneficiaries, resulted in a drastic reduction in the number of participants from 2.4 crore to nearly 1.7 crore by the deadline of April 30.

An anonymous official informed PTI that a significant portion of the women—around 50 to 55 lakh—did not complete the required e-KYC process. On the other hand, approximately two to three lakh women managed to correct errors during this verification period. Furthermore, about 12 lakh women were identified as earning above the income threshold, and over 4.5 lakh exceeded the age limit of 65. Compounding the issue, an additional five lakh beneficiaries were found to also be receiving assistance from the Namo Shetkari scheme, which further disqualified them from the Ladki Bahin scheme.

This substantial cut has raised concerns among political leaders, who suspect that the government is trying to reduce its financial liabilities amid claims of a financial crisis. Critics argue that the stringent verification process undermines the original intent of the scheme, which was to empower women in economically disadvantaged positions. The backlash from opposition parties has been swift, with calls for accountability and a reassessment of the eligibility criteria in light of the scheme’s objectives.

As the situation unfolds, many are left questioning the efficacy of governmental support programs and their ability to reach those who truly need assistance. The Maharashtra government now faces the challenge of defending its actions while also addressing the concerns of numerous women who have suddenly lost their financial support.
