In a significant crackdown following the tragic deaths caused by spurious liquor in Pune, 22 officers from the Maharashtra Excise Department and local police have been suspended. This decision comes in the wake of the unfortunate incident that resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals, highlighting the ongoing battle against illegal alcohol distribution in the region.
The fatalities occurred within a short time frame, with most victims found in the Phugewadi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad, while others succumbed in Pandhare Mala, Hadapsar, Pune. Reports indicate that the consumption of toxic alcohol led to this catastrophic health crisis, prompting immediate law enforcement action. Currently, eight arrests have been made, including that of Yogesh Wankhede, who is suspected of producing and distributing the illicit liquor.
Among those suspended are notable figures from the local police force, including Senior Police Inspector Sanjay Mogale, Assistant Police Inspector Hasina Sikalgar, and Sub-Inspector Hasan Mulani. Additionally, six officers from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police, comprising a senior inspector, a sub-inspector, and four constables, faced suspension for neglecting their responsibilities in curbing the illegal liquor trade.
Atul Kanade, the Superintendent of Police, confirmed that 13 personnel from the state excise department also faced disciplinary action. This extensive suspension reflects a broader initiative to address the systemic issues surrounding the illegal liquor trade and ensure accountability among law enforcement officials.
Following this series of events, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation into the entire network involved in the illegal liquor supply. He assured the public that the government is taking stringent measures to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future. The government’s swift response aims not only to restore public confidence but also to reinforce the commitment to public safety in Maharashtra.
