In a significant development for the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the two factions of the party have come together to withdraw disqualification petitions against each other’s MLAs. This move comes just two weeks after a rift emerged following a crucial vote during a floor test of the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government.
The divisions within the AIADMK became evident when 25 MLAs, led by former ministers CV Shanmugam and SP Velumani, supported the new government on May 13, which led to tensions with the other faction led by former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. Four of those MLAs subsequently resigned from AIADMK to join the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, while 22 MLAs voted against the government.
On Wednesday, Velumani confirmed that both factions have formally withdrawn their disqualification petitions, which had been submitted to the Assembly Speaker, JCD Prabhakar, seeking to disqualify legislators from the opposing group. The Speaker acknowledged the receipt of the withdrawal letters and is expected to make an announcement regarding the situation on Thursday.
Velumani emphasized that the recent tensions should not be seen as a complete split within the party, stating that the factions have only experienced “differences of opinion.” He noted that there is a collective call to the general secretary, Palaniswami, to establish a committee aimed at introspecting the party’s recent electoral setbacks. Palaniswami has responded affirmatively, indicating a methodical approach to address the issues at hand.
This truce marks a crucial moment for the AIADMK as it navigates internal challenges while attempting to maintain unity ahead of future electoral battles. The resolution reflects a willingness to mend fences and reaffirm a common goal among the members of the party, despite the recent discord.
