Rajasthan High Court Acquits Asaram of Gang Rape Charges, Confirms Life Sentence for Rape

The Rajasthan High Court made a significant ruling on Wednesday regarding the controversial case involving Asumal Harpalani, widely known as Asaram Bapu. The court acquitted him of gang rape charges in connection to the alleged sexual assault of a minor, while simultaneously upholding his life sentence for the separate charge of rape.

The decision was delivered by a bench comprising Justices Arun Monga and Yogendra Kumar Purohit, who meticulously examined the appeals put forth by Asaram and his co-accused, Sharatchandra and Shilpi. The original conviction stemmed from a sessions court ruling in April 2018, which found Asaram guilty of raping a minor at his ashram in Jodhpur in 2013. He was sentenced to life imprisonment under multiple legal provisions including the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Juvenile Justice Act.

In its latest judgment, the High Court not only rejected Asaram’s plea to overturn the life sentence but also confirmed the evidentiary basis for the charges of rape. The bench noted that the evidence presented was adequate to support the conviction for rape but lacked sufficient merit to substantiate the allegations of gang rape and criminal conspiracy against him and his associates.
