NIA Takes Charge of Investigation into Naga Men’s Abduction in Manipur

In a significant development regarding the abduction of six Naga men by armed groups, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will now lead the investigation. This decision comes following a meeting on Saturday with a six-member delegation from the United Naga Council in Imphal, where concerns about the ongoing violence and unrest in the hill districts were discussed.

The abduction incidents have escalated tensions between the Naga and Kuki communities in the region. The apex body representing the Kuki tribes, known as Kuki Inpi Manipur, has responded to the situation by extending a shutdown for an additional 48 hours. They assert that this measure is necessary for the protection of their community’s rights, dignity, and future amidst allegations that 14 Kuki individuals, including three minors, have been taken hostage by Naga groups.

These alarming events trace back to May 13, when armed factions kidnapped over 38 individuals from both the Kuki and Naga communities in the districts of Kangpokpi and Senapati. This wave of violence followed a tragic ambush that resulted in the deaths of three church leaders and injuries to five others who were returning from a meeting in Churachandpur. Additionally, a civilian was killed in Noney district, further compounding the prevailing insecurity.

As per statements from Manipur’s Home Minister, Govindas Konthoujam, the police managed to secure the release of 28 abducted individuals soon after the incidents. However, ongoing fears and tensions continue to loom large over the communities involved, with many still unaccounted for. Reports indicate that local law enforcement is grappling with the complexities of the situation, as numerous individuals remain entangled in this conflict.

The decision to involve the NIA is seen as a step towards addressing the intricate dynamics of this conflict-ridden region, with hopes that a federal agency could bring a more structured approach to the investigation. As the situation evolves, the focus will remain on ensuring the safety and rights of all communities affected by these violent incidents in Manipur.
