The digital presence of the satirical political initiative known as the Cockroach Janata Party has faced significant turmoil, as its founder, Abhijit Dipke, announced that their official Instagram account was recently hacked. In a troubling twist, Dipke revealed that his personal Instagram account also fell victim to the same cyber invasion. This incident raises concerns about the security of social media accounts, particularly for political campaigns that thrive on public engagement.
Furthermore, in a move that surprised many, Meta, the parent company of Instagram, took down the backup account created for the Cockroach Janata Party soon after the primary account was compromised. This means that the campaign currently finds itself without access to any of its social media platforms. In light of these developments, Dipke urged followers to disregard any posts made after the hacking incident, emphasizing that they do not represent official communications from the party.
The Cockroach Janata Party, which was established on May 16, has quickly gained traction, attracting a substantial following of 21.7 million Instagram users. The campaign is particularly aimed at the youth, describing itself as a “political front of the youth, by the youth, for the youth.” The initiative was launched in reaction to controversial remarks made by Chief Justice Surya Kant, who had likened some unemployed young people to “cockroaches” on May 15. His comments sparked widespread outrage and served as a catalyst for the campaign’s inception.
Abhijit Dipke, a 30-year-old political communications strategist hailing from Pune, has a background in public relations and journalism. Before launching the Cockroach Janata Party, he contributed to the social media strategy of the Aam Aadmi Party. His experience in the political arena has equipped him to navigate the challenges that come with running a public-facing campaign.
In the wake of the hacking incident, the official X account of the Cockroach Janata Party was also withheld in India. However, demonstrating resilience, Dipke announced the establishment of a new X account shortly after. This quick adaptation reflects the campaign’s commitment to staying connected with its audience, despite facing significant hurdles.
