Congress Marks Historic Return to Tamil Nadu Cabinet After Nearly Six Decades

The Indian National Congress is set to re-enter the Tamil Nadu Cabinet, with two of its Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) taking the oath of office on Thursday. This momentous occasion marks the first involvement of the party in the state’s governance in 59 years, a significant milestone for both Congress and its supporters in Tamil Nadu.

On Wednesday, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal announced that party president Mallikarjun Kharge had sanctioned the inclusion of MLAs S Rajesh Kumar and P Viswanathan in the state’s Council of Ministers. Venugopal expressed his enthusiasm on social media, stating, “This is a historic occasion for us, as the Congress joins the Tamil Nadu cabinet after a long gap of 59 years!” He also expressed confidence in the two MLAs fulfilling the expectations of Tamil Nadu’s citizens and contributing to the welfare-oriented governance vision set forth by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

The ceremony will take place at Lok Bhavan, where Chief Minister Vijay is preparing to expand his existing Cabinet, which currently comprises ten members. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will administer the oaths to over 20 new ministers, a move that underscores the ongoing political reshuffle following the recent state assembly elections.

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which is debuting in Tamil Nadu’s political arena, emerged as the largest party in the state assembly elections held on May 4, securing 108 out of 234 seats. However, it fell short of the majority, paving the way for coalition governance. The inclusion of Congress members in the Cabinet is seen as a strategic alliance that could influence the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, especially given the historical significance of Congress’s absence from the state Cabinet for nearly six decades.

This development not only revives the Congress presence in Tamil Nadu but also signifies a potential shift in political dynamics, particularly as the state grapples with pressing issues such as social welfare, economic development, and governance.
