CNG Prices Soar in Delhi: Two Hikes in 48 Hours Push Rates Over Rs 80/kg

The price of compressed natural gas (CNG) in Delhi has witnessed a significant increase, reaching Rs 80.09 per kilogram after a Re 1 hike announced on Sunday. This marks the second consecutive rise within just 48 hours, following a hefty Rs 2 increase implemented on Friday. The latest adjustments have pushed CNG prices to an unprecedented level in the capital, a first crossing the Rs 80 mark.

Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the leading provider of CNG in northern India, explained that the recent price hikes were necessary to help mitigate the effects of rising input costs and the substantial appreciation of the US dollar against the Indian rupee. The company emphasized that despite the increase, CNG still presents significant savings—up to 45%—compared to traditional fuels used in vehicles, highlighting its continued value for consumers amidst fluctuating fuel prices.

In neighboring areas, the revised rates reflect similar trends; in Noida and Ghaziabad, CNG is now priced at Rs 88.7 per kg, while in Gurugram, the price stands at Rs 84.12 per kg. These hikes come in the wake of broader fuel price adjustments that were also announced on Friday, which saw petrol and diesel prices raised by approximately Rs 3 per litre. Currently, petrol in Delhi is priced at Rs 97.77 per litre, with diesel following closely at Rs 90.67 per litre.

The recent surge in fuel prices has been attributed to the rising costs of crude oil in the global market, which has a direct impact on domestic fuel pricing. This situation has raised concerns among consumers, who are already grappling with the economic challenges posed by inflation and rising living costs. As the government navigates these complexities, the burden of higher fuel prices may lead to increased public discontent and calls for intervention.
