West Bengal Government Initiates Re-Verification of Caste Certificates Amid Allegations of Fraud

The West Bengal government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has announced a significant re-verification initiative for all caste certificates issued since 2011. This decision comes in the wake of allegations highlighting extensive irregularities during the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration. An official confirmed this development on Friday, stating that the State Backward Classes Welfare Department has instructed district magistrates throughout the state to commence the re-verification process.

This exercise is expected to affect approximately 1.6 crore caste certificates that have been issued in the last fifteen years, as reported by The Times of India. Of these, around 1 crore pertain to Scheduled Castes (SC), 21 lakh to Scheduled Tribes (ST), and 48 lakh to Other Backward Classes (OBC). The government has noted that the validity and authenticity of many of these certificates have been questioned by various stakeholders, necessitating this review.

The official order emphasizes that the re-verification will adhere to the current regulations and will be carried out by the authorities responsible for issuing these certificates. It has also been made clear that any certificate found to have been improperly issued will face legal scrutiny and prompt disciplinary action against those involved. State Tribal Development and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Kshudiram Tudu expressed serious concerns over the issuance of fraudulent SC, ST, and OBC certificates during the former TMC rule, highlighting the need for a thorough investigation.
