Criminal Charges Filed Against Chennai and Singapore Firms Over Fatal Baltimore Ship Collision

The United States Department of Justice has initiated a criminal case against two companies, one based in Chennai and the other in Singapore, along with an Indian national, following a tragic incident in March 2024. The case stems from a cargo ship’s catastrophic collision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, which resulted in the deaths of six repair workers when the bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River.

The vessel in question, the Dali, which flies the Singapore flag, was traveling from Baltimore to Colombo at the time of the accident. Fortunately, the crew, comprising 22 Indian nationals, escaped injury. The companies implicated include Synergy Marine, located in Singapore, and Synergy Maritime, based in Chennai. The individual facing charges is Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair, who served as the technical superintendent for both firms.

According to the charges, Nair and the two companies are accused of conspiracy and failing to promptly notify the US Coast Guard about a known hazardous situation, which is a violation of maritime law. Additionally, they face allegations of obstructing the agency’s proceedings and providing misleading information. Notably, the indictment claims that they also contributed to pollution in the Patapsco River due to the cargo carried by the ship.

The magnitude of the accident is underscored by the reported economic damage, which is estimated to exceed $5 billion. The court documents reveal that the Dali experienced power failures twice within a brief span of just four minutes while maneuvering out of Baltimore’s harbor, ultimately leading to the disastrous collision with the bridge.

This incident has raised significant concerns regarding maritime safety standards and accountability, particularly involving international shipping firms operating in U.S. waters.
