Delhi High Court Revives 4PM News YouTube Channel After Government Blockade

The Delhi High Court has reinstated the YouTube channel 4PM News after it was blocked by the Central Government earlier this year, citing national security concerns. On March 12, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology took action to block 4PM News, claiming that its content posed risks to public order and national security. The channel’s editor, Sanjay Sharma, along with the organization, challenged this order in court, arguing that they were not provided with a formal directive or reasons for the suspension, which hindered their ability to defend their position effectively.

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav delivered the verdict on May 5, allowing the channel’s restoration while simultaneously maintaining the ban on 26 videos deemed “objectionable” by the authorities. The court’s decision underscores the importance of due process and the right to free expression, particularly in the digital realm.

During the proceedings, Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, representing the government, informed the court that an Inter-Departmental Committee had evaluated the material on the channel and concluded that it should be blocked to protect national interests. The government’s stance is that the content propagated by 4PM News posed threats to India’s sovereignty and public safety, alleging that it was spreading conspiracy theories and misinformation.
