Three individuals have been detained in connection with the murder of an aide to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, according to reports from PTI. The arrests were made by a Special Investigation Team formed to look into the killing of Chandranath Rath, who was shot dead near Kolkata last Wednesday.
The detained suspects have been identified as Vishal Srivastava from Buxar district in Bihar, along with Mayank Mishra and Vicky Maurya, who hail from Uttar Pradesh. While there have been reports of their detention, it remains unclear whether they have been officially arrested, as officials have yet to provide clarification on that matter.
The Special Investigation Team, comprised of West Bengal Police personnel, traveled to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh based on insights gathered from technical surveillance and digital tracking. This investigative effort points to a broader conspiracy, as authorities suspect that at least eight individuals may have been involved in Rath’s assassination, although the specific motive behind the crime has not yet been determined.
Chandranath Rath was fatally shot while he was driving home to Barasat, an area in North 24 Parganas. As he navigated the Madhyamgram region around 10:20 PM, assailants on motorbikes intercepted his vehicle and opened fire. The incident has been linked to increasing political violence in West Bengal, which has been notably tense following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory over the Trinamool Congress in the Assembly elections.
The murder has raised concerns about communal tensions and incidents of intimidation within the state, reflecting the ongoing political vulnerabilities following the recent electoral shifts. The police’s investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rath’s death continues, as they work to unravel the network behind this violent act.
