In a tragic encounter on the night of Friday, two Bangladeshi nationals lost their lives near the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura, following a confrontation with the Border Security Force (BSF). The incident occurred around 11 PM when a group of approximately 15 individuals allegedly engaged in smuggling entered Indian territory, specifically about 200 yards from the border.
According to reports, the group was intercepted by a BSF patrol as they attempted to return to Bangladesh. A statement from the Border Guard Bangladesh indicated that the situation escalated quickly, leading to a physical altercation during which Indian personnel resorted to firing two rounds of shotgun pellets. This resulted in serious injuries to the two men, who were later rushed to a local hospital in Tripura, where they succumbed to their wounds.
The victims, identified as Mohammad Morsalin, a 20-year-old student, and Nobir Hossain, aged 40, were pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the medical facility. The incident took place in the Kamalasagar-Pathariyadwar area of Tripura’s Sepahijala district, close to the Kasba upazila in Bangladesh’s Brahmanbaria district.
While official comments from the BSF have yet to be released, The Times of India reported that the soldiers acted in self-defense after the group allegedly hurled stones at them during the confrontation. The group was reportedly involved in transferring goods across the border fence under the cover of darkness, a practice that has often drawn the attention of security forces.
In the aftermath of this incident, the bodies of the deceased were handed over to the Border Guard Bangladesh after a battalion-level flag meeting was conducted at the Khirnal border area in Kasba. This incident has reignited discussions surrounding the ongoing issues of cross-border smuggling and the complex dynamics of border security between India and Bangladesh. Such encounters highlight the delicate balance that security forces must maintain while ensuring safety and order along the porous borders.
