In a significant political development for Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma has been elected as the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Assam Assembly. This move positions him to commence his second consecutive term as the Chief Minister of the state. The election took place during a meeting of the BJP legislature party held in Guwahati, where eight party legislators proposed Sarma’s name for the leadership role.
JP Nadda, a senior BJP leader, was present at the assembly, along with central observer Nayab Singh Saini, to oversee the proceedings. The BJP and its allies celebrated a decisive victory in the recent assembly elections, securing a total of 102 seats out of 126 in the Assembly. In comparison, the Congress-led opposition managed to win only 21 seats, with the BJP itself obtaining 82 seats while its coalition partners, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, each captured 10 seats.
Sarma had previously submitted his resignation to the Governor on Wednesday, marking the formal transition of power. Following his election, he confirmed that the oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend the event, underscoring the significance of this political milestone.
This re-election of Himanta Biswa Sarma as the NDA leader highlights the BJP’s continuing dominance in Assam politics. Analysts attribute the party’s success to various factors, including a strong consolidation of Hindu votes, effective welfare initiatives, and strategic electoral maneuvers such as delimitation, which have favorably positioned the BJP and its allies in the state.
As Sarma prepares to take on the responsibilities of Chief Minister once again, many are watching to see how he will address the challenges facing Assam, including issues related to development, ethnic tensions, and the state’s unique socio-political landscape.
