In a historic political shift, Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially taken the oath of office as the chief minister of West Bengal. This significant event marks the first time a leader from the BJP has secured this position in the state, following a decisive victory against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the recent Assembly elections. The ceremony took place on Saturday and was graced by prominent figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and various leaders from the National Democratic Alliance.
The BJP’s triumph in the elections has been monumental, as they claimed 207 out of 294 seats in the West Bengal Assembly, ending the TMC’s long-standing rule that lasted for 15 years under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. To form a government, a party or coalition requires a minimum of 148 seats, and the TMC managed to secure only 80 seats. This shift in political landscape indicates a significant change in the electorate’s mood and support for the BJP’s agenda in a state that has traditionally leaned towards leftist and regional parties.
Adhikari’s path to the chief ministerial position has not been without its challenges. A former minister in Banerjee’s cabinet, he switched allegiance to the BJP in 2020, a move that raised eyebrows and set the stage for a fierce political rivalry. His victory in the Bhabanipur constituency, where he defeated Banerjee by over 15,000 votes, was particularly notable. This follows his previous win over her in the Nandigram constituency during the 2021 polls, a defeat that forced Banerjee to win a bye-election to return to the Assembly.
While the election results have ushered in a new political era, they have also been accompanied by reports of unrest in the state. Following the declaration of results, West Bengal witnessed episodes of political violence, alleged communal intimidation, and vandalism. Such incidents have raised concerns about the stability and harmony of the state as the BJP seeks to assert its governance amid a charged political atmosphere.
Alongside Adhikari, several other BJP leaders including Dilip Ghosh and Agnimitra Paul were sworn in as ministers, marking a new cabinet formation for the state. As the BJP prepares to govern, the party’s ability to address pressing issues, including law and order, economic development, and social cohesion, will be closely watched by both supporters and critics alike.
