In a recent statement, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has raised serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that approximately one-sixth of its Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Lok Sabha owe their electoral success to what he describes as ‘vote theft.’ He emphasized that if elections were conducted fairly, the BJP would struggle to secure even 140 seats in the Lok Sabha.
Gandhi’s comments were shared via social media, where he argued that the manipulation of votes has been employed not just to capture individual seats but also to engineer entire government victories. With the BJP currently boasting 240 MPs in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi’s claim implies that around 40 members may have benefited from electoral malpractices, prompting him to question the legitimacy of these MPs and suggest they could be labeled as ‘infiltrators.’
This choice of terminology has been a hallmark of the BJP’s political strategy over recent years, particularly concerning states grappling with issues of undocumented migration. The BJP has often used the term ‘infiltrators’ in reference to alleged illegal migrants from countries like Bangladesh, linking it to broader discussions on citizenship rights and land ownership.
Moreover, Gandhi criticized the institutions that oversee voter registration and the electoral process, accusing them of being under the control of the ruling party. He posited that the BJP’s fundamental concern lies in the unveiling of the truth, particularly in states such as Haryana, where he claimed the entire state government comprises ‘infiltrators.’
Gandhi’s remarks come on the heels of his previous comments regarding the BJP’s electoral wins in West Bengal and Assam, which he described as clear instances of manipulation. These allegations, if substantiated, could have significant implications for the BJP as it approaches future elections, especially given the rising scrutiny over electoral integrity in India.
