In a significant political upheaval, Raghav Chadha, a Member of Parliament from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), revealed that the party’s legislative faction in the Rajya Sabha is fracturing, with a group of members planning to align themselves with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This announcement was made during a press conference held on Friday, where Chadha was accompanied by fellow AAP MPs Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal.
Chadha asserted that a majority, nearly two-thirds, of AAP’s representatives in the Upper House support his decision to merge with the BJP. Among those in favor of this move, he mentioned AAP MPs Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Vikram Sahney, and Swati Maliwal. Prior to the rift, AAP boasted a total of ten members in the Rajya Sabha, making this development a noteworthy shift in the party’s parliamentary strength.
Addressing the media, Chadha expressed disillusionment with the current trajectory of AAP, stating, “The AAP, which I nurtured with my blood and sweat, and gave 15 years of my youth to, has deviated from its principles, values and core morals. Now this party does not work in the interest of the nation but for its personal benefits.” He further emphasized that he had felt increasingly out of place within the party, remarking that he was “the right man in the wrong party.” This sentiment highlights a deeper ideological divide that appears to have emerged within the ranks of AAP.
The submission of documentation to the Rajya Sabha chairperson, indicating their intent to shift allegiance to the BJP, marks a pivotal moment for both AAP and the BJP, potentially altering the political landscape in the Upper House. This split comes on the heels of a recent crackdown by the Enforcement Directorate, which conducted raids on the residences of several AAP officials, including Mittal, on April 15. Analysts suggest that such actions may have contributed to the growing rifts within the party, further catalyzing this unexpected political realignment.
As the situation develops, the implications for AAP and its leadership will be closely monitored. Questions arise regarding the future of the party and its ability to maintain cohesion among its remaining members, particularly in light of these recent events. The political dynamics within India are continuously evolving, and this split could have significant ramifications for both the AAP and the broader opposition landscape.
