Congress Files Privilege Motion Against PM Modi Over Controversial Address

The Congress party has taken a significant step by filing a privilege notice against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that his national address on April 18 constituted an “abuse of power.” This action was formalized in a letter addressed to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, where Congress MP KC Venugopal expressed concerns regarding Modi’s remarks, which he argued unfairly targeted opposition members of Parliament.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi criticized various opposition parties for their role in the recent defeat of the Union government’s bill aimed at amending the 2023 Women’s Reservation Act. The bill, which aimed to adjust the boundaries of electoral constituencies and enhance women’s participation in politics, was rejected in the Lok Sabha on April 17. As a constitutional amendment, the bill required a two-thirds majority to pass, a threshold the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was unable to achieve without the backing of opposition parties.
