The Congress party has urged the Indian government to initiate a thorough investigation into the recent spate of violent incidents in Manipur, which tragically included the deaths of two young children. The opposition party’s demand follows a disturbing incident in Bishnupur’s Tronglaobi, where a projectile allegedly struck a home, claiming the lives of a five-year-old boy and an infant girl.
In light of these developments, the Congress has called for an immediate and time-bound inquiry, alongside other urgent measures aimed at reinstating law and order in the region. They have also demanded compensation for the families affected by the violence and institutional reforms to ensure lasting peace in Manipur. A. Bimol Akoijam, the Congress MP for Inner Manipur, criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at both the central and state levels, accusing them of neglecting their duty to safeguard the lives of residents in Manipur.
The tragic incident on April 7 occurred while the children were asleep in their home, raising serious concerns about security in the area. Reports indicate that the projectile may have been fired from nearby hill slopes, leading to allegations that Kuki militants were involved. However, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, representing the Kuki community, has vehemently denied these claims, insisting that their members had no connection to the incident.
The village where this tragedy unfolded is situated close to the hill regions of Churachandpur, an area that has been plagued by ethnic tensions since violent clashes erupted between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities in May 2023. The ongoing conflict has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, marked by allegations, counter-claims, and a dire need for governmental intervention to restore peace.
The Congress party has taken its concerns to the highest level, submitting a charter of demands to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the deteriorating situation in Manipur. As the state grapples with the aftermath of these violent episodes, the call for a comprehensive investigation and accountability highlights the urgent need for dialogue and reconciliation among the involved communities.
