Kolkata witnessed a violent clash between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters on Monday, resulting in the arrest of nine individuals. The incident occurred outside a police station amid heightened tensions as both parties ramp up their campaigning efforts for the upcoming Assembly elections. Polling in West Bengal is scheduled to take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
The confrontation began when supporters of BJP’s candidate for Kolkata Port, Rakesh Singh, gathered for a meeting on Hossain Shah Road. According to police reports, the BJP workers began chanting slogans, prompting a response from TMC supporters who also raised counter-slogans. This exchange escalated into violence, resulting in injuries to several individuals, as confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Harikrishna Pai.
In connection with the clash, three First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed by the police to address the disturbances. This is not an isolated incident, as similar clashes between BJP and TMC workers were also reported in the Nandigram constituency, where BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is contesting the elections. Such violent occurrences highlight the increasingly charged political environment as both parties vie for dominance in West Bengal.
Amidst these tensions, Kalyan Banerjee, a lawyer and Lok Sabha MP from the TMC, has approached the High Court expressing concerns about potential arrests of party workers leading up to the elections. Reports suggest that the Election Commission has compiled a list of approximately 1,000 individuals labeled as “troublemakers,” indicating a proactive approach to maintaining law and order during this politically critical period.
The situation in West Bengal’s political landscape remains fluid as both the BJP and TMC continue to mobilize their supporters while trying to mitigate violence and ensure a peaceful electoral process. With polling dates approaching, the focus will now shift to how the authorities manage political rivalries and ensure the safety of voters and campaigners alike.
