Youth Protest Backlash: Supreme Court Ruling Faces Strong Criticism from CJP

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has voiced strong discontent over a recent Supreme Court decision that permits ongoing investigations into cases linked to last week’s youth protests. The ruling, described as “wholly unacceptable,” has sparked concerns regarding potential misuse by governmental authorities.

Saurav Das, the chief spokesperson for CJP, articulated his party’s fears that the Union government and states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might exploit this directive to escalate their enforcement against the protesting individuals. He emphasized the group’s worry that the order could lead to further harassment of students who participated in the demonstrations, which were characterized by calls for various social and political reforms.

The Supreme Court’s ruling, issued earlier on Tuesday, allows local authorities in Delhi and other states to carry on with investigations into the registered cases concerning the protests. However, the court has clearly directed that no coercive measures should be taken against the protesting students, particularly ensuring the release of minors who had been detained, provided they have no prior criminal record.

Chief Justice Surya Kant, who headed the bench, also instructed police to preserve all relevant surveillance footage and recordings related to the protests. This move is seen as a precautionary measure to maintain transparency and accountability in handling the situation.

Despite the Supreme Court’s attempts to balance the law and protect protesters’ rights, CJP argues that allowing investigations to proceed contradicts previous assurances from the Union government, which had pledged to safeguard the rights of the protesters. This situation underlines the ongoing tensions between the youth, who are asserting their right to protest, and the government, which is grappling with how to respond to these rising voices of dissent.
