Contrarily, Emma, played by Victoria Chakma, requires sand for an entirely different purpose: to fill her cat’s litter box. Together, they navigate through the bustling streets of Dhaka, retreating to their homes where they examine their peculiar treasures—Hassan finds a mobile phone while Emma discovers a severed finger adorned with crimson nail polish.
Sand City has gained attention as part of the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, which took place from April 23 to 26, and is poised for release in Bangladesh. The film, with a runtime of 100 minutes, showcases Hasan’s skillful storytelling, having also written and edited the script himself. The cinematography, executed by Mathieu Giombini, further enhances the film’s exploration of urban life through what film scholars refer to as urban sensorium cinema. Mahde Hasan, at the age of 39, is not new to the world of filmmaking, having previously directed several acclaimed short films that have garnered recognition.
