Pawan Khera Seeks Anticipatory Bail from Gauhati High Court Amid Defamation Allegations

In a significant legal move, Congress leader Pawan Khera has approached the Gauhati High Court for anticipatory bail following a case lodged against him by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The controversy erupted after Khera made claims on April 5, asserting that he possessed documentary evidence proving that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma held passports from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. Following the filing of a First Information Report (FIR), Khera first sought legal protection from arrest through transit anticipatory bail, which was granted by the Telangana High Court on April 10 for a limited duration of one week. However, the Supreme Court intervened on April 15, placing a stay on the Telangana High Court’s order. In light of this development, Khera sought to have the stay vacated, but his request was denied on the following Friday. The Supreme Court also declined to extend his transit bail and advised Khera to present his case directly to the Gauhati High Court instead.
