In a recent statement, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi emphasized the need for a politically equitable approach to the delimitation of electoral constituencies, particularly in the context of increasing the Lok Sabha’s strength. Writing in an article for The Hindu, she articulated that any reconfiguration of constituency boundaries must safeguard the interests of smaller states and those that have successfully implemented family planning initiatives.
Gandhi’s remarks come just days before a special session of Parliament, where lawmakers will deliberate on a proposed amendment bill aimed at expanding the Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816, with a significant allocation of 273 seats reserved for women. While the intent behind this amendment is to enhance representation, Gandhi cautioned that any changes should not merely focus on arithmetic but must also consider the political implications for various states.
She pointed out that maintaining the current proportion of representation per state could inadvertently diminish the relative influence of certain regions, as the amplification of absolute numbers might overshadow smaller states. Gandhi underscored that a careful balance is necessary to ensure that every state’s voice is adequately represented, particularly those with fewer resources or smaller populations.
Moreover, the Congress leader insisted that any delimitation efforts must follow a comprehensive Census, similar to the procedures of the past. She highlighted the importance of caste enumeration, suggesting that understanding demographic nuances will be crucial in shaping fair electoral boundaries. This, she argued, will help in addressing existing disparities and ensuring a more inclusive political landscape.
As the country gears up for discussions on this critical issue, Sonia Gandhi’s call for careful consideration and equitable representation serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in electoral reforms. The need for a politically astute delimitation process is essential not only for representation but also for fostering a more inclusive democracy.
