Supreme Court to Review Election Commission’s Decision to Freeze Voter Rolls Ahead of Bengal Assembly Elections

The Supreme Court of India has agreed to hear petitions on Monday contesting the Election Commission’s recent decision to freeze the electoral rolls ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in West Bengal. This announcement arrives in the backdrop of the state gearing up for elections slated for April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.

On Thursday, the Election Commission finalized and subsequently froze the voter lists for all Assembly constituencies in West Bengal, eliciting concerns from various political parties and stakeholders. The electoral rolls, as published on February 28, revealed a staggering exclusion of over 61 lakh voters, raising questions about the integrity and inclusiveness of the electoral process.

The ongoing revision process has been contentious, with approximately 60 lakh cases labeled as “doubtful and pending” still under consideration following numerous objections to the earlier draft rolls, which were made public in December. The Supreme Court had intervened on February 20, mandating that judicial officers of district judge rank assist in finalizing the voter rolls to ensure a fair revision process. This underscores the judiciary’s role in maintaining electoral integrity amidst administrative challenges.

Furthermore, on March 10, the apex court directed the establishment of appellate tribunals consisting of former High Court judges to adjudicate appeals regarding voter exclusions. This means that individuals whose requests for inclusion were denied by judicial officers could seek redressal through these tribunals, adding another layer to the electoral process aimed at protecting voter rights.
