The Election Commission of India has initiated a reverification process for all entries made in the electoral rolls of Uttar Pradesh, following concerns raised over potential discrepancies. This decision, announced on Sunday, applies to names added, removed, or modified through Forms 6, 7, and 8 by computer operators across all 403 Assembly constituencies. The action follows the conclusion of the special intensive revision on April 10, according to reports from the Hindustan Times.
Forms 6, 7, and 8 are essential for the electoral process, as they facilitate the registration of new voters, the removal of names, and the correction of existing entries. In a significant policy shift, the Election Commission has prohibited computer assistants from handling forms directly related to the voter rolls. Instead, voters must submit their forms physically, which will then be digitised by booth-level officers using the BLO App. This measure aims to enhance the integrity of the electoral process by reducing the chances of manipulation.
The decision to reverify voter roll entries comes in the wake of allegations made by the Congress party, which claimed that over 13,000 voter names had been substituted with those of others in the Pilibhit Sadar Assembly constituency after the final electoral rolls were published. In response to these claims, Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Electoral Officer, Navdeep Rinwa, acknowledged the discovery of irregularities in 10,470 entries within the constituency after the revision process. This revelation raises serious questions about the accuracy of the electoral rolls.
In the previous Assembly elections held in 2022, the Pilibhit Sadar seat was won by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sanjay Gangwar, who secured victory by a narrow margin of fewer than 7,000 votes. The allegations of voter roll manipulation come at a crucial time, as the integrity of electoral processes is paramount in ensuring fair representation in democracy. An investigation conducted by the district election officer in Pilibhit found that a computer operator had entered as many as 13,779 applications using Form 8, which is specifically designed for correcting details in existing electoral rolls or changing polling stations.
The Election Commission’s move to enforce stricter regulations and ensure reverification reflects an increased emphasis on transparency and accountability in India’s electoral processes. As tensions rise surrounding electoral integrity, stakeholders across the political spectrum are closely monitoring developments in Uttar Pradesh, a state that plays a pivotal role in national politics. With the upcoming elections, the focus remains on ensuring that the electoral rolls accurately reflect the democratic will of the people.
