In Lucknow’s Sapru Marg, a small office has become the center of an intriguing political endeavor since February. A group of individuals, primarily Brahmins, has been convening regularly, strategizing on how to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. This gathering symbolizes a growing discontent among a demographic that has long been regarded as the party’s foundational support base.
Rajesh Shukla, a businessman and frequent participant at these meetings, voiced a sentiment common among the group members. “The BJP was our party,” he lamented, expressing frustration at what he perceives as a shift in allegiance towards other backward classes (OBCs). This demographic, comprising nearly half of Uttar Pradesh’s population, has increasingly been courted by the BJP in recent years, altering the party’s traditional upper-caste image.
Historically, the BJP has been closely associated with upper-caste Hindus, particularly Brahmins, who were integral to its formation and growth. Influential figures like Deendayal Upadhyaya, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Murli Manohar Joshi were pivotal in establishing the party’s ideological and political framework. However, the party’s strategy over the past decade, focusing on attracting OBC and Scheduled Caste votes, has seemingly alienated its core Brahmin supporters.
As a result, many Brahmins feel they have been sidelined in a party they once viewed as representative of their interests. Rajendra Nath Tripathi, another leader part of this new political movement, commented, “Brahmins were the pillars in the house of BJP,” highlighting the community’s sense of loss regarding their influence within the party. This emerging Brahmin-first political entity aims to recapture the narrative and assert their significance in Uttar Pradesh’s political landscape, which is increasingly dominated by caste dynamics.
The implications of this political shift could be substantial as the upcoming elections approach. The BJP, having successfully secured its position by appealing to a broader electorate, may now face challenges from factions within its own base. The new party’s rise reflects a larger trend of disenfranchisement among certain voter segments, indicating that the BJP’s electoral strategy may need recalibration to maintain its support.
