On Friday, Imphal witnessed a significant demonstration as frustrated citizens took to the streets to voice their anger over recent killings in Manipur. The protests, organized by the Federation of Haomee, targeted the ongoing ethnic violence and the government’s perceived inability to restore peace in the region.
The protests unfolded in five districts predominantly inhabited by the Meitei community. Demonstrators engaged in what was termed a ‘sound protest,’ utilizing banging utensils and striking electric poles to amplify their demands. Motorists joined in solidarity by honking their horns, creating a cacophony that echoed the protesters’ grievances.
One of the focal points of the protest was Kangla Fort, a historically significant site that served as the political and cultural heart of the erstwhile Manipur kingdom. Protesters marched towards this landmark, which is located near the governor’s residence and the chief minister’s secretariat. Despite the police deploying tear gas and implementing barricades at various junctions, many demonstrators successfully reached the Kangla gate, although they were ultimately prevented from entering the fort.
The police’s response to the gathering included firing multiple rounds of tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of injuries among the protesters during the unrest. The situation reflects the growing tensions in Manipur, which have been exacerbated by rising ethnic conflicts and calls for the updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
As Manipur grapples with these challenges, the protests serve as a reminder of the deep-seated issues that continue to plague the region. Citizens are increasingly demanding accountability from the government and pressing for immediate action to restore normalcy and security.
