The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially assumed control over the investigation into the shocking murder of Parvinder Singh Jhota, an anti-drug activist from Punjab. This decision follows a public outcry from Jhota’s family and supporters, emphasizing the need for a thorough and impartial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death, which occurred on October 13 in Mansa district.
Jhota was fatally shot while conducting a Facebook Live session inside a medical store, during which he confronted the store’s owner, Ashwani Kumar, regarding allegations of drug sales to an elderly customer. Kumar, who was apprehended shortly after the incident in Salasar, Rajasthan, is currently in custody and facing serious charges. The community is in mourning, and Jhota’s family has vowed to withhold his last rites until justice is served, further highlighting the emotional weight and societal implications of his tragic death.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the transfer of the case to the CBI in response to demands from Jhota’s family, underscoring the seriousness with which the government is treating this incident. On the same day, a CBI team arrived in Mansa to gather crucial evidence and information related to the case. The agency has also indicated that Jhota’s post-mortem examination will take place at a medical facility in Chandigarh, aiming for transparency and thoroughness in the ongoing investigation.
In the aftermath of the murder, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) characterized the shooting as a regrettable act stemming from “personal enmity.” However, many are raising concerns about the broader implications of drug trafficking in the state, an issue that has attracted significant media and political attention. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also weighed in, alleging that the drug trade has flourished under the AAP government, calling for urgent actions to address this pressing social crisis.
The case of Parvinder Singh Jhota serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug-related issues in Punjab, a state that has been grappling with the consequences of substance abuse and trafficking for years. As the CBI steps in to investigate this high-profile murder, stakeholders from various sectors will be watching closely, hoping for a resolution that brings justice to Jhota’s family and addresses the larger issues of drug abuse in the region.
