On Tuesday, Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), cautioned about the influence of what he termed as “demonic forces” from the West, which he claimed were attempting to destabilize India. Speaking at the RSS’s annual Dussehra event in Nagpur, Bhagwat expressed his conviction that a regime change in India is unlikely, despite the external pressures.
Bhagwat’s remarks resonate against the backdrop of increasing unrest in various nations, including protests within India itself, where calls for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar have emerged due to alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process. The RSS, a key ideological parent of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has long been characterized by its focus on national pride and cultural preservation.
In his speech, Bhagwat elaborated on the broader implications of these “demonic forces,” suggesting that a cultural storm is sweeping through the West that seeks to undermine traditional values and social cohesion. He noted that even advanced nations are not immune to this turbulence, hinting at a global phenomenon that transcends borders. His comments were particularly pointed as he referenced recent protests in countries like France, Albania, Bangladesh, and Nepal, which he claims are manifestations of a deeper discontent fueled by issues such as corruption and inadequate governance.
For instance, Bhagwat highlighted the significant protests in Bangladesh that resulted in the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, a direct consequence of public frustration with corruption. Similarly, he mentioned the youth-led demonstrations in Nepal in September 2025, which erupted in response to a government ban on social media amid rampant corruption and nepotism. These examples serve as cautionary tales for India, suggesting that a lack of accountability can lead to widespread unrest.
Bhagwat’s assertion that a strong India poses a challenge to existing global powers aligns with the RSS’s long-standing narrative of fostering national strength and identity. He emphasized that as India’s stature rises on the global stage, it may threaten the influence of certain Western nations, leading to attempts to weaken the country from within. This perspective reflects a broader apprehension among many nationalist groups in India about external influences that could disrupt the nation’s sovereignty and cultural integrity.
