In a concerning incident highlighting the challenges faced by journalists in India, Ayush Tiwari, a reporter for Scroll, was detained by the Delhi Police on Saturday while covering a protest organized by youth groups in the capital. The protest aimed to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, amid rising discontent over the Election Commission’s operations.
Tiwari was apprehended near ITO, away from the main protest site at Jantar Mantar, where demonstrators had gathered to voice their grievances against the Election Commission. Despite displaying his press credentials prominently and repeatedly asserting his identity as a journalist to the police, Tiwari was taken away in a police van. “I literally shouted out to say I am a journalist,” he stated. However, the police reportedly responded that many individuals were claiming to be journalists.
The protest was organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, a political campaign, alongside student groups linked to Leftist organizations. It reflects a growing wave of demonstrations across the nation, with various factions calling for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation due to perceived inefficiencies in the electoral process, particularly during the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
In the recent past, public sentiment has been increasingly critical of the Election Commission, with accusations of mismanagement and lack of transparency gaining traction. Demonstrations have spread to multiple cities, urging the electoral body to address these concerns and restore public confidence in its operations.
The detention of Tiwari raises serious questions about press freedom and the treatment of journalists in the line of duty in India. Media professionals have faced increasing scrutiny and restrictions while covering protests, often leading to clashes with law enforcement. The situation has sparked discussions on the role of the police in managing public protests and safeguarding the rights of journalists.
As the protests unfold, they serve as a reminder of the critical role that the media plays in a democratic society, holding those in power accountable and providing a platform for public discourse.
