In a significant political development, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has suspended Punjab MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana over what they termed as ‘anti-party activities and indiscipline.’ This decision came just hours after the legislator publicly criticized the state government for failing to address the acute shortage of teachers in government schools within his constituency of Maur, located in Bathinda district.
Maiserkhana took to social media to express his concerns, lamenting his decision to enroll his children in government schools due to the current educational crisis, which he believes jeopardizes their future. He claimed that after numerous attempts to engage with senior officials regarding this pressing issue, he felt compelled to voice his discontent publicly. The MLA stated that his appeals to AAP leaders, including former Delhi education minister and Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia, had been met with inaction, resulting in a persistent dearth of teaching staff in these institutions.
The situation escalated as Maiserkhana revealed that even Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had refused to meet with him to discuss the matter. In his social media video, he expressed his frustration, stating, “How long will I tolerate this? What wrong did I do to the party?” His claims have sparked conversations about the effectiveness of the AAP’s educational reforms and their ability to address the needs of Punjab’s youth.
Adding to his concerns, Maiserkhana highlighted that the Schools of Eminence, an initiative introduced by the AAP government to elevate educational standards and serve as model institutions, are also grappling with insufficient teacher recruitment. “My children study where the children of [three] crore common Punjabis also study, and I speak today as a father,” he articulated in his statement, emphasizing the collective responsibility shared by the government towards all students.
This incident not only sheds light on the internal strife within the AAP but also raises critical questions about the state of education in Punjab. As the issue of teacher shortages continues to affect numerous districts, the effectiveness of the AAP’s governance in addressing such fundamental problems is under scrutiny. The political fallout from this suspension may further complicate AAP’s standing in the state as they prepare for the electoral challenges ahead.
