Supreme Court Responds to Alarming Rise in Delhi Rape Cases, Calls for Accountability

The Supreme Court of India has taken significant notice of an alarming surge in rape cases reported in Delhi, describing the situation as indicative of a profound “systematic failure” on the part of law enforcement and administrative bodies responsible for ensuring public safety. Among the most harrowing cases was the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl by three men impersonating police officers in a park adjacent to Lady Shri Ram College on September 21. Adding to the grim statistics, the decomposed body of a 16-year-old girl was discovered in Swaroop Nagar shortly after she was allegedly raped and murdered. Moreover, on August 4, a 17-year-old girl was gang-raped by a bus driver and conductor while traveling in a moving bus, which traversed approximately 47 kilometers without being stopped at any police checkpoints. Such incidents have evoked painful memories of the infamous Nirbhaya gang rape case from 2012, further fueling public discourse around women’s safety in India.

During a session on Monday, Justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran expressed their deep concern regarding the rising number of such incidents. The bench emphasized the urgent need for accountability and remedial measures to ensure the safety of women in the national capital. Drawing parallels to the Nirbhaya case, the justices remarked that the recent occurrences reflect a lack of effective policing and oversight, which are crucial in safeguarding citizens.
