BJP Veteran Criticizes DJ Concerts at Badrinath as an Attack on Sacredness

In a recent statement, veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Murli Manohar Joshi voiced strong objections to the organization of music and DJ events at the revered Badrinath Dham in Uttarakhand. Joshi characterized these events as a violation of cultural norms and labeled them as a “direct assault on the sanctity of the shrine.” His comments come in the wake of a two-day Devbhoomi Cultural Festival held on September 19 and 20 in the town of Badrinath, located in the Chamoli district.

The festival, organized in collaboration with the Indian Army’s Operation Sadbhavana, along with the Chamoli district administration and the Uttarakhand Tourism Department, aimed to highlight the state’s rich folk culture, local handicrafts, traditional cuisine, and the customs of border villages. However, it sparked a heated controversy when videos surfaced on social media showing a so-called “bhajan jamming” session that resembled a concert rather than a solemn religious gathering.

Joshi pointed out that the essence of Badrinath lies in its serene environment, intended for peaceful worship through divine hymns. He lamented the shift towards contemporary entertainment, stating, “There is a reason why even the conch shell is forbidden in Badrinath Dham. That place has its own sanctity, and now we have DJs blasting music there. Club-style entertainment has its time and place, but not at a sacred Tirtha (pilgrimage site). This government’s obsession with transforming every Dham into a picnic spot is eroding the spiritual essence of Devbhumi.”

The backlash against the festival underscores a growing sentiment among many devotees and cultural guardians who believe that such events detract from the spiritual significance of pilgrimage sites. Critics argue that while promoting local culture is essential, it should never come at the expense of maintaining the inherent sanctity of sacred spaces.

As the debate continues, it raises important questions about the balance between cultural promotion and preserving the spiritual integrity of religious sites. The challenge remains for authorities to find ways to celebrate local traditions without compromising the sanctity that attracts thousands of pilgrims to such revered locations.
