FIR Filed Amid Protests at Lovely Professional University Over Alleged Rape Incident

In a deeply concerning incident at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab, a first information report (FIR) has been lodged against an unidentified individual following protests by students over alleged sexual assault on campus. The protests erupted late Saturday night and escalated into violence early Sunday morning, leading to property damage and disruption of traffic on the busy Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway.

The protests were initiated in response to claims that a female student was raped inside Girls Hostel 3, allegedly by an electrician employed at the university. According to student testimonies, after reporting the incident, the victim was sent home without any action being taken by the university administration. This has led to heightened anger and frustration among the student body.

Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Jalandhar Range, Naveen Singla, confirmed that the FIR was filed following the collection of statements from protesting students. Reports indicate that the assault took place three days prior to the protests, prompting students to demand accountability and swift action from the university authorities.

In response to the growing unrest, Singla stated that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to thoroughly investigate the matter. He assured that the inquiry would be comprehensive, involving scientific examination and collaboration with representatives from the university. “We are currently verifying the facts,” he said, emphasizing the seriousness with which the matter is being approached.
