The Election Commission has reached out to renowned scientist and Bharat Ratna awardee CNR Rao, requiring him to clarify a discrepancy regarding the spelling of his name in the electoral rolls of Karnataka. This request comes amid a comprehensive revision of the state’s voter list, as reported by The Hindu on Wednesday.
CNR Rao, celebrated for his extensive contributions to solid-state and materials chemistry, received a notice from the Election Commission indicating a mismatch in how his name is recorded. While the previous electoral roll accurately listed him as ‘Prof CNR Rao,’ a recent update mistakenly transcribed his title as ‘Proff CNR Rao,’ inadvertently adding an extra ‘f’. This type of error is classified as a ‘self-mismatch’, which can occur when an individual attempts to verify their details against historical records.
This situation highlights a broader issue within the electoral revision process, where numerous logical discrepancies can arise. These discrepancies may include mismatches in personal details such as parental names or age gaps, as well as unusual data like the number of children reported. Such inconsistencies can lead to voters being excluded from electoral rolls, a significant concern in a state like Karnataka, where over one crore names have reportedly been removed amid this revision effort.
Acquaintances of CNR Rao expressed surprise upon learning about the notice, emphasizing that this communication had not been widely disclosed before The Hindu’s inquiry. As a 92-year-old luminary in the scientific community, Rao’s eligibility to vote is particularly important, given his stature and contributions to the nation.
The Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, was bestowed upon Rao in 2014, recognizing his lifetime achievement and dedication to science. As the electoral revision continues, the implications of Rao’s situation underline the need for meticulous attention to detail in maintaining accurate voter records, ensuring that no eligible citizen is inadvertently disenfranchised.
