Calcutta High Court Signals Possible Ban on FIRs Against Abhishek Banerjee

The Calcutta High Court has indicated that it may soon impose restrictions on the filing of new first information reports (FIRs) against Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee without its prior approval. This statement came during a hearing on Monday, where the court addressed concerns surrounding multiple criminal complaints being lodged against Banerjee despite existing protective orders from the judiciary.

Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya expressed frustration over the continuous barrage of allegations, stating, “Enough is enough.” He highlighted that he has been presiding over these cases since May 2026 and suggested that a formal directive may soon be issued to prevent any further FIRs from being registered without the court’s consent.

Banerjee’s legal team argued that the numerous complaints against him are unwarranted and come despite the interim protection granted by various courts. The ongoing petitions challenge the legitimacy of the criminal cases alleging that Banerjee was involved in irregularities tied to Sebaashray camps—a healthcare initiative launched under the TMC’s governance in West Bengal in January 2025. Allegations include medical negligence and the use of expired medications, which have raised serious concerns among the public.

During the proceedings, the court questioned the rationale behind the complaints, urging that there must be a substantiated investigation before linking Banerjee to these serious allegations. It also examined the necessity of custodial interrogation, expressing skepticism about the claims made by the state’s counsel. The court permitted the police to conduct investigations but signaled that it would not tolerate frivolous or unsubstantiated allegations against the TMC leader.

As political tensions continue to rise in West Bengal, the court’s stance may have significant implications for the future of Banerjee and the TMC.
