Delhi High Court Issues Summons to Journalist Sudhir Chaudhary Over Defamation Case Linked to Youth Protests

The Delhi High Court has summoned well-known journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, along with the public broadcaster Doordarshan News, in connection with a defamation lawsuit filed by Vikram Sherawat, a civil services aspirant. The case stems from allegations made during a news broadcast on July 27, which Sherawat claims wrongfully portrayed him as calling for violent actions against the Indian Parliament.

Sherawat, who participated in protests at Jantar Mantar against what he termed mismanagement of competitive examinations, asserts that Chaudhary’s remarks were intended to discredit him and label him as anti-national. In his petition, he alleges that the journalist’s statements aimed to vilify individuals who were peacefully protesting and sought to paint their legitimate grievances in a negative light.

The civil services aspirant is seeking a substantial sum of ₹5 crore in damages from Chaudhary and his production company, Essprit Productions, as well as from Doordarshan News. Sherawat’s involvement in the protests commenced on June 6, with the Cockroach Janta Party, a political campaign he volunteers for, demanding accountability and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan due to the perceived mishandling of examination processes.

Significantly, the protests gained momentum when thousands joined Sherawat and his peers on July 20, following a high-profile incident involving activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was forcibly removed by police during a hunger strike. This incident underscored the tensions surrounding the issues raised by youth activists and the government’s response to their demands.

This summons marks a notable moment in the intersection of journalism, public discourse, and legal accountability. As the court prepares to hear the case, it raises broader questions about the responsibilities of media personalities in reporting on sensitive political matters and the potential repercussions of their narratives on public perception and individual reputations.
