Controversy Erupts as Dhirendra Shastri Urges Hindus to Shun Non-Vegetarian Food During Durga Puja

A significant uproar has emerged in West Bengal following remarks made by Dhirendra Shastri, the head of Bageshwar Dham temple, during an event in Kolkata. On Sunday, he urged Hindus to refrain from consuming non-vegetarian food during the Durga Puja festivities, which are set to commence on October 6 and conclude on October 10 this year. Shastri described non-vegetarian food as ‘dirty’ and expressed his discontent with its consumption at festivities and pandals, stating that such practices undermine the sanctity of the religious celebrations.

Shastri’s comments were met with backlash from various quarters, particularly from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party. The party pointed out that the Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, had recently received Shastri, suggesting a tacit endorsement of his views. The TMC has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to impose its dietary preferences on Bengali culture, stating on social media that they are attempting to ‘snatch fish and meat from the plates of Bengalis.’ The party has also claimed that raids on restaurants are being conducted before the festival, further fueling tensions.

Durga Puja holds immense cultural significance for Bengalis, and non-vegetarian cuisine is an integral part of many celebrations, including the sacrifice of animals, which some view as a traditional ritual. The TMC’s former spokesperson, Riju Dutta, emphasized that Durga Puja is more than just a festival; it embodies the emotional and cultural identity of the Bengali people. Dutta insisted that any attempt to dictate how people celebrate this festival would not be tolerated.

The backlash against Shastri’s comments highlights the ongoing cultural and political battle over identity in West Bengal.
