Major Crackdown: Assam Police Arrests 330 in Fraud and Cyber Crime Operation

In a significant operation early Saturday morning, the Assam Police apprehended 330 individuals suspected of participating in various fraudulent activities, including impersonating law enforcement officials. This extensive crackdown commenced at 3 AM and primarily targeted the Cachar district, as reported by PTI.

Director General of Police, Harmeet Singh, revealed that the majority of the arrests were concentrated in regions across Assam, with notable exceptions in districts such as Sadiya and Majuli. He emphasized that these individuals were accused of deceiving victims by promising to resolve police cases swiftly, all while posing as police personnel. Singh highlighted that many of those arrested would often loiter near police stations, targeting individuals who came to lodge complaints.

Furthermore, some of the suspects used intimidation tactics to extort money from victims, preying on their desperation for prompt assistance. In his statements, Singh noted, “They assured people that they could expedite their complaints and ensure smooth processing, which unfortunately led to numerous scams. Some of the arrested were also engaged in the trade of stolen goods.” This revelation points to the multifaceted nature of the fraud schemes operating within the state.

In addition to traditional methods of deception, Singh indicated that a segment of the arrested individuals utilized cyber platforms to facilitate their criminal activities.
