Delhi Voter List Purge Exceeds 2025 Election Margins in Majority of Assembly Seats, Study Reveals

A recent study conducted by the Sabar Institute has unveiled significant changes in the voter registration process in Delhi, suggesting that the deletions from the draft voter list have surpassed the winning margins in 68 out of the 70 Assembly constituencies. This revelation comes in the wake of a rigorous revision of electoral rolls aimed at enhancing the accuracy of the voter database in the national capital.

According to the draft voter list released on Monday, over 4.7 million names have been removed from the rolls, accounting for roughly 33% of the total electorate in Delhi. Out of these deletions, around 4.33 million individuals were marked as absent or had permanently relocated, while approximately 280,000 were identified as deceased. Additionally, 140,000 names were disqualified due to dual registrations.

The demographic analysis reveals that more than two million deletions were concentrated within the 30 to 44 age group, highlighting a significant impact on younger voters. The electoral authorities have announced that individuals who believe their names have been unjustly removed can file claims and objections from August 31 to September 30. The resolution of these appeals is set to occur by October 29, with the finalized electoral roll to be published on November 4.

The implications of the deletions are noteworthy, with the study indicating that in 24 constituencies, the number of votes cast during the 2025 elections exceeded the total number of electors listed in the draft. Furthermore, in 36 seats, the count of removed voters surpassed the total votes garnered by the elected candidates. These statistics raise concerns about the potential disenfranchisement of voters and the overall integrity of the electoral process.

In the 2025 Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in 48 of the 70 seats, and the current findings could have significant repercussions for future electoral strategies. As political parties prepare for upcoming elections, the focus will increasingly shift to how these changes in voter registration will influence voter behavior and turnout.
