Recent statements by US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, indicated that the long-awaited US-India trade agreement is nearing completion, with significant progress made in principle. However, developments in Washington in the past month have cast a shadow over this optimism, as new tariff initiatives threaten to escalate tensions between the two nations.
One of the most concerning proposals is the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, a bipartisan initiative in the US Senate that has garnered the support of the President. This bill seeks to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods imported from specific countries, particularly targeting the five largest importers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, as well as countries that are seen as aiding Russia in evading sanctions. Given that India ranks as the second-largest importer of Russian crude oil, it stands to be heavily impacted by these proposed measures, potentially straining US-India relations further.
The US has consistently taken a firm stance against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine, and this latest move is a continuation of that policy. While the US aims to exert pressure on Russia through economic means, it inadvertently risks jeopardizing its own trade relationships with important partners like India.
Another factor complicating the situation is the recent proposal from former President Donald Trump, which aims to impose 100% tariffs on generic medicines imported from India, set to take effect in 2028. This move is seen as a direct threat to India’s robust pharmaceutical sector, which supplies a significant portion of the world’s generic drugs. Such tariffs could lead to increased healthcare costs and undermine India’s status as a leading global supplier of affordable medications.
These developments raise serious questions about the future of the US-India trade agreement, which many had hoped would bolster economic ties and enhance cooperation on various fronts. As the two countries navigate these challenges, it remains to be seen whether diplomatic efforts can effectively counter the rising tide of protectionism and safeguard a mutually beneficial trade relationship.
