VD Savarkar’s Legacy Defended in Court by Grandnephew Amid Defamation Case Against Rahul Gandhi

In a recent court proceeding in Pune, Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of the Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, defended his ancestor’s legacy by asserting that Savarkar “never harbored hatred towards Muslims,” and instead aimed to promote their advancement. This statement emerged during Satyaki’s cross-examination in a defamation case initiated by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has been accused of making derogatory comments regarding Savarkar during a speech in London earlier this year.

During the court session, which was reported by Bar and Bench, Satyaki Savarkar took a firm stance against the allegations made by Gandhi. He contended that the Congress leader’s remarks misrepresented Savarkar’s writings, specifically a claim that Savarkar had recounted an incident involving violence against a Muslim individual in a book. Gandhi purportedly suggested that the Hindutva leader found such actions pleasurable, which Satyaki argued painted his uncle as a “mob lyncher” and an extreme antagonist of Muslims.

“By these words, Savarkar was portrayed unfairly,” Satyaki said in court, asserting that Savarkar’s works primarily focused on pathways to uplift the Muslim community rather than inciting animosity. He emphasized that historical narratives surrounding Savarkar should reflect his intentions towards inclusivity and progress. This defense not only seeks to clarify Savarkar’s philosophical stance but also aims to counteract the negative portrayals often associated with his ideology.

In his testimony, Satyaki also expressed uncertainty about the extent to which the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) aligns with Savarkar’s principles. The RSS, known as the ideological backbone of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has often been linked to Savarkar’s thoughts on nationalism and Hindu identity. The ongoing discourse surrounding Savarkar has been particularly relevant in the context of contemporary Indian politics, especially given the increasing polarization and debates on communal issues.

The case stems from an event where Rahul Gandhi, while addressing a gathering in London in March 2023, made statements that have since been interpreted as defamatory towards Savarkar. Following the remarks, Satyaki Savarkar filed a lawsuit against Gandhi, aiming to protect his family’s legacy and challenge the narrative that positions Savarkar as a figure of hate. This legal battle highlights the importance of historical interpretation and the implications of public discourse in shaping contemporary political identities in India.
